Embracing Unexpected Paths: From Business Development Manager to Supply TeacherAs a Business Development Manager, my world revolved around training teams, stakeholders, and investors about our product lineups and upcoming launches. Communication was my forte, and I thrived on interaction and engagement. Teaching, however, was never part of my career plan until life threw me a curveball.Coming to study in the UK, I encountered restrictions on work hours in the UK that narrowed my job options. While taking on various roles to sustain myself, I stumbled upon a supply teaching position—an opportunity I initially hesitated to pursue. My strong suit in mathematics since secondary school led me to specialize in teaching mathematics, with occasional forays into other subjects.Looking back now, it's incredible how much I've come to love this unexpected career path. Teaching has its challenges, but overcoming them has been immensely rewarding. Importantly, I haven't strayed from my core skills as a business development manager—communication, active listening, attention to detail, and problem-solving—which I apply daily in the classroom. Each day as a teacher brings a sense of fulfillment as I witness the impact I have on students' lives. Being part of something meaningful and contributing positively to society has given my career a new sense of purpose. Even as I pursue my master's degree project and prepare to establish myself fully in the UK job market, I'm torn between my past life as a product manager and the newfound passion for teaching. The question lingers: Should I continue down the path of business management or fully commit to teaching, which requires obtaining a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)? It's a decision that weighs heavily on me, yet I'm excited about the possibilities that lie ahead in the UK career landscape.A special shoutout to all the teachers worldwide—your dedication and hard work do not go unnoticed. Each day, we impact lives and shape futures, making a difference in ways both big and small. Good morning, and here's to embracing unexpected journeys and the meaningful work that comes with them! 🌟#CareerJourney #BusinessManagement #Teaching #QTS #LifeDecisions #CareerTransition

I was the youngest university 'Executive Director and Head of Campus' in Australian history. It was a job i'd worked my entire career for; completed two Degrees to attain, and was my dream job come true.....But I knew that there was something more for me.It was a noise, a feeling, a scratch, a CALLING... that my work wasn't finished. A silent, but ever-present whisper that there was more to do...I knew that I could impact far many more people's lives, and that I could make a much bigger difference out in the big scary, wide world, than I could within one single institution.I finished my first tenure and made the incredibly terrifying decision not to renew a second tenure - despite being 5 weeks pregnant sacrificing my maternity leave - and took the massive leap into the unknown to rebuild my business - that I'd left behind to take this role on in the first place! It was a huge risk, especially with my second baby coming along, but ....... that decision was LIFE-CHANGING.It has gone on to proove to me that we truly can build anything, do anything and become anything.I am a qualified teacher trainer, and teach every day people how to create amazing courses of their own, and become extraordinary leaders in their field of expertise.Everyone has some kind of skill, knowledge or experience to share- and it can be shared positively, profitably, and in a way that changes lives all round. If you'd like to create your own online courses, coaching programs, memberships and build a global online business - come and join my 'Legends Lab', and let's make it happen together ❤️ #coursecreation #coursecreators #coursecoach #edupreneur #businesscoach #businesstips #7figurebusiness

This is all about opening up academia and reimagining how it can educate and teach learning workers who haven't always seen themselves at a management school. So many workers -- we think over 10 million(!) could benefit from new pathways into first-time management #futureoflearning #futureofwork #tearthepaperceiling

Six months may seem like a long lead time for preparing business school applications, but a LOT more needs to be done between now and the September submission deadlines than just writing essays.Stratus Admissions Counseling clients often ask what they need to be doing NOW. Since MBA programs often change the essay prompts, forget about those for the moment. Here are six things you should do in March!✔️Clarify your short-term goals. If you don’t know where you are headed, how do you know you need an MBA to get there? Take time to investigate post-MBA opportunities.✔️Meet with your manager. You have just six months to enhance your work experience. Now is the time to ask for assignments that will enable you to get exposure and develop new skills. Ask for constructive feedback, and then find an opportunity to address it in the short term.✔️Prepare for the GMAT/GRE/EA.If you haven’t already done so, decide which test you will take. Most schools are agnostic between the GMAT and GRE, so prepare for and take the test on which you can get the strongest score.✔️Build a list of target programs.Once you clarify your goals, you can identify the MBA programs whose resources will help you develop the knowledge, skills, and relationships necessary to move forward in your career. Start with a list of about 12 to 15 schools. ✔️Engage in leadership and community activities. Now is not the time to take a sabbatical from your community engagement. If you are in a leadership role, consider using this time to hone your leadership style, apply innovative thinking to push new ideas in your areas of influence, and build a team to carry the organization forward when you step away.✔️Connect informally with potential recommenders.Beyond your current immediate supervisor, who will go to bat for you? You should have several people in mind to serve as an additional recommender. Schedule some calls to reconnect or invite folks to go for a coffee or a walk.

Passionate about politics and leadership in Higher institutionsPutting yourself forward for executive positions in higher institutions can be a great way to gain valuable leadership experience and skills. It can also provide you with a platform to make a positive impact on your school community. When aspiring for politics or any leadership positions in the future, being an executive in a higher institution can offer several benefits. Here are a few reasons why:1. Leadership Development: Serving as an executive allows you to develop and refine your leadership skills. You'll have the opportunity to make decisions, manage teams, and take responsibility for various tasks.2. Networking: Being involved in the executive team exposes you to a wide network of individuals who share similar interests and ambitions. This network can be valuable for future collaborations and opportunities.3. Experience in Governance: As an executive, you'll gain firsthand experience in governance and decision-making processes. This knowledge can be applied to future roles in politics or leadership positions.4. Building a Track Record: Holding an executive position demonstrates your ability to take on responsibilities and successfully fulfill them. It can serve as evidence of your leadership capabilities when pursuing future opportunities.5. Making a Difference: Being part of the executive team allows you to contribute to the betterment of your institution and the student body. You can initiate and lead projects, advocate for student needs, and drive positive change.Remember, while being an executive can provide valuable experiences, it's also important to balance your academic commitments and personal growth. Make sure to prioritize your studies and manage your time effectively. If you're interested in pursuing an executive position, I recommend reaching out to your institution's student government or relevant student organizations to learn more about the application or election process. Good luck, and I'm here if you have any more questions.

An excerpt from my chat on The Doc Chat with Dr. John C. Turner. If you desire to work in higher education, make connections on LinkedIn with those who have the jobs you desire so you can determine if the work is a match for your lifestyle and personality. Also understand the Higher Education is a business and if we don’t enroll and more importantly retain students, our doors will close. So while you are deciding which part of this industry is your “fit” get basic business skills so you can lead others in this business. Then remember that Education is never secondary, it’s ALWAYS primary as it’s the basis for all other industries.#networkingtips #highereducationjobs #highereducationleadership
