What are Emergency Room wait times and how are they calculated?

Our Emergency Department (ED) wait time prediction uses machine learning to give an hourly prediction of the maximum time 8 out of 10 patients (80thpercentile metric) who are in the Sunnybrook ED will wait until they see a doctor for assessment.

Why are you displaying your Emergency Room wait times?

Sunnybrook is displaying our Emergency Department (ED) wait time predictions on this website, and in the waiting room of our ED. These wait time predictions have been implemented to help keep you informed during your wait for emergency care, with the goal of increasing transparency, and reducing overall stress during your time in the ED.

What do the numbers on the wait times prediction mean?

Number of patients in the Emergency Department refers to the number of patients who are waiting in the ED waiting room after they have been registered and triaged by the triage nurse.

The number of patients waiting for a physician refers to the number of patients who, after triage, have been called to Emergency Department Zone and are awaiting an assessment from the physician.

Who updates the wait times on your website, and on the screen in the Emergency Department?

The wait time prediction screens are updated hourly by an automated system.

How am I assessed for my turn to be seen in the Emergency Department?

Upon arrival to the Emergency Department, each patient is seen and assessed by a nurse. Each patient is assessed using the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS). Patients in the Emergency Department are seen by a doctor based on that assessment. Patients are not seen based on the order of arrival.

A doctor will see people with the most urgent, critical concerns first, regardless of who arrived first.
